Lithuania’s premiere hotel and restaurant was also Lithuania’s first private restaurant, and has stayed ahead of the competition ever since.
It was in 1987 that the first restaurant featuring the name of Stiklai emerged and Romualdas Zakarevičius, one of the three co-owners and the President of Stikliai Company, tells us that they were tough times. |

“We couldn’t buy anything from the government, we had to buy direct from farmers and suppliers because we had to source all of our own products. We could not sell alcohol either, so as an enterprise it was very challenging.”Sitting in the beautiful and plush surrounds of Stikliai today, it’s hard to imagine that there were ever any tough times, though I remembered that I made my first visit to an ice cream shop called Stikliai back in 1989.

“The ice cream shop was very popular and was a great success for us, and that gave us the money to expand further. We had a buffet diner next, and that was very popular with students and they would sit here and do their study and eat all the food.
“One of our biggest early boosts was when Caroline, the Princess of Monaco dined at our hotel which gave us a lot of stimulus. Then the next day the opera people were here and it continued to grow to become a cultural location. |

| “Overall we have had 18 years in business, and we had a lot of drive. We were still young when we started. It was all new and we could earn money for ourselves for the first time. The three of us, including my partners Aleksandras Ciupij and Anna Ciupij, stimulated each other, and luckily we had three different specialties and we didn’t mix in each others area. |
| “Our biggest hurdle in the first few years was to prove that we weren’t fly-by-nighters. The government kept changing its attitude to private business and we could never get comfortable. Along the way we had all sorts of problems like food supply, petrol shortages and the banking crisis, but we just had to keep working.” |
